What is psychological counselling?
Psychological counselling helps you better understand your thoughts, feelings and behavioural patterns. A psychologist does not judge or prescribe medication — counselling is based on conversation, evidence-based methods and collaboration.

What to expect from a session with a psychologist?
Sessions with a psychologist are mostly conversation-based, where you can open up about your thoughts and feelings in a safe, non-judgmental environment. Putting thoughts into words and expressing emotions consciously often helps you understand situations better and see them from a new perspective. Reflecting together with a psychologist can help you find clearer connections between your experiences, thoughts and feelings.
Sessions do not focus only on problems. Your strengths, skills and resources are also an important part — they are what help you cope better with difficult situations and move forward in life. If needed, a psychologist can introduce practical techniques and skills to support everyday coping. For example, these may help reduce anxiety and stress, shift limiting thought patterns, improve communication skills or learn to manage emotions more consciously.
The goal of sessions with a psychologist is not to tell you what to do or how to live. It is rather a collaboration, through which the psychologist helps you find the solutions and answers that work best in your life.
How long should you see a psychologist?
The length of psychological counselling is different for everyone and depends on your goals, concerns and the kind of change you want to bring about in your life. Sometimes a single session is enough to gain a new perspective, find clarity in a situation and feel lighter.
At other times a longer collaboration with a psychologist is beneficial, where you work step by step through deeper topics. A longer process allows you to better understand your thoughts and feelings, shift habitual thought patterns and create more balance, clarity and satisfaction in life.
The frequency and duration of sessions are usually shaped in collaboration with the psychologist and can always be adjusted to suit your needs and the changes happening in your life.
How long does a session with a psychologist last?
The length of a session depends on the format of counselling, the complexity of the topics and the number of participants. Sufficient time helps create a calm and safe environment where it is possible to open up about thoughts and feelings and discuss important topics in depth.
An individual session usually lasts 45–60 minutes. This time is generally sufficient to focus on one or more topics that matter to you, talk through experiences, thoughts and feelings, and analyse them together with the psychologist. The pace of an individual session is relaxed and adapts to your needs — you do not have to say everything at once but can move step by step.
